Beautiful hikes around Sulden

Our hiking tips in the Stilfserjoch National Park

Starting from Schaubachhütte, tours lasting several hours take you up to unique summits:

  • Suldenspitze 3,376 m (challenging)
  • Cevedale 3,769 m (challenging)
  • Hintere Schöntaufspitze 3,325 m (relatively easy)
  • Eisseespitze 3,230 m (challenging)
  • Königsspitze 3,850 m (challenging)
Tabaretta Hütte (2.556 M)

If you aim high, there are two equally amazing ways of reaching the Tabarettahütte, both with stunning views and a touch of alpine history.

From the Langenstein / the K2 hut:
The chairlift will take you to Langenstein mountain station in comfort. From there, take trail no. 4a across a moraine, a relic from the Ice Age. Below the awe-inspiring north face of the Ortler, memorials invite you to stop for a minute. Continue up to Tabarettahütte over a lush slope. The sun terrace rewards you with a direct view of the Ortler north face, as far as Reschensee lake and the Ötztal Alps if the weather is clear.

From Sulden:
From the old church in Sulden, trail no. 4 leads through dense forest, then above the tree line across moraines to the fork in the road with the Langenstein route. The Tabarettahütte and its spectacular views aren’t far from here.

To go back, choose one of the two ascent routes. If you opt for the more convenient version and want to take the chairlift back down to the valley, bear the times of the last descent in mind.

Ascent time: approx. 1.5 h (from K2 hut) or 2 h (from Sulden)

Descent time: approx. 1 to 1.5 h

Difference in elevation: 250 / 700 m

Level of difficulty: No problem for sure-footed hikers. However, robust shoes are recommended due to the moraine gravel.

Payerhütte (3.029 m) – from Langenstein

This challenging hike to J. Payerhütte along the Tabaretta ridge is suitable for experienced, sure-footed hikers who are not prone to dizziness. Once you’re up there, breathtaking views of the Suldental open up, all the way to Trafoi and Reschensee lake. The Payerhütte is one of South Tyrol’s highest shelters and a starting point for the standard route up the Ortler (3,905 m).

Ascent time from K2 hut: approx. 3.5 h

Descent time: approx. 3 h

Difference in elevation: 700 m

Level of difficulty: Suitable for sure-footed hikers who are not prone to dizziness

Düsseldorfer Hütte (2.721 m)

Located in the Zaytal, the Düsseldorfer Hütte is located in a stunning spot, surrounded by glacier lakes and numerous three-thousanders. The sun terrace offers what are probably the best views of the Ortler, the Zebrù and the Königsspitze.

Ascent time from the Kanzel: approx. 1.5 h

Difference in elevation from the Kanzel: 400 m

Ascent time from Sulden: approx. 2.5 h

Difference in elevation: 850 m

Level of difficulty: No problem for hikers used to walking.

Hintere Schöntaufspitze (3.325 m)

Bask in the glorious views of the Ortler group from the summit and stop for refreshments at the Madritsch Hütte after your tour.

Ascent time from the cable car mountain station: approx. 2.5h

Descent time: approx. 2 h

Difference in elevation: 700 m

Level of difficulty: No problem for hikers used to walking. However, you should be used to walking on rocky terrain.

KÄLBERALM (2.350 M)

For an easy walk, follow the wide, partly steep forest path that branches off behind the Hotel Marlet and leads gently uphill. The ascent via the narrow road past the Alpina Curiosa Museum is a little more varied. After the wayside cross, trail no.18 winds its way gently upwards, leading for a short distance along a forest road (keep to the left) and then through an idyllic forest. After about 300 metres uphill, both routes meet and follow the forest road to the Kälberalm.

Up there, a fantastic panoramic view of the Sulden mountains awaits, dominated by the Ortler with its imposing north face. To get back, take either the easy route along the forest road or descend via trail no. 24 to Café Waldruhe and on to Sulden.

Ascent time: approx. 1.5 h

Descent time: approx. 1 h

Difference in elevation: 400 m

Level of difficulty: No problem for hikers used to walking

MADRITSCHHÜTTE (2.818 M)

From the mountain station, the path initially leads uphill along the chairlift. After a short time, a sign points to the left towards Madritschhütte – a beautiful, well-laid out path with several rest areas invites you to linger.

Once you get to the top, a spectacular view of the majestic peaks of the Sulden mountain world opens up. If you want to aim even higher, make a short detour to the Suldenblick – a vantage point that is reached by climbing an additional 80 metres.

For the way back, just follow the same route that you came on. A refreshment stop at the Madritschhütte or the mountain station of the cable car perfectly rounds off your mountain experience.

Ascent time: approx. 1 h

Descent time: approx. 45 min

Difference in elevation: 200 m

Level of difficulty: No problem for hikers used to walking

From the StilfserJoch along Goldseeweg to Furkelhütte

A beautiful tour with gigantic panorama views, leading past Goldsee lake and remnants of cannon positions.

Total walking time: approx. 3.5-4 h

Difference in elevation: 100 m uphill, 700 m downhill

Level of difficulty: Good fitness levels required! No problem for hikers used to walking.
