Advent & tradition
Shining lights, shining eyes.
When the streets are suffused with the fragrance of cinnamon, roasted almonds and mulled wine, the most magical time of the year has begun. Advent in the Vinschgau region is all about ancient traditions, a non-commercial atmosphere and festive Christmas markets that allow you to experience the magic of the season in a way that is truly unique. A winter holiday at the Hotel Die Post is the perfect opportunity to enjoy the Advent season as it was meant to be: in peace and quiet, with all its traditions, customs and of course the romance of the Christmas markets.

Christmas markets in the Vinschgau region are a feast for all the senses. Innumerable lights are lit in the picturesque streets of the historic villages and towns, while regional craftsmen present their lovingly created works. Hand-carved nativity scene figures, fragile glass ornaments and wool products made from wonderfully soft South Tyrolean sheep’s wool are among the treasures to be discovered here. Culinary delights include freshly baked “Zelten” (a seasonal fruitcake) and “Strauben” (a type of fritter) as well as delicately spiced mulled wine and invite you to linger and savour the moment.
Whether on the traditional Christmas market in Glurns, against the medieval backdrop of South Tyrol’s smallest town, or in the enchanting ambience of Advent in Meran: The region’s authenticity and charm can be felt everywhere. This is where alpine Christmas traditions and southern joie de vivre blend into a Christmas atmosphere that cannot be found anywhere else.

The customs of the pre-Christmas season in South Tyrol go back centuries and make this time of year extra-special. One highlight is the mystical “Klosn” procession, when St. Nicholas and his companions go from village to village on the first Saturday in December. While he hands out little gifts for the children, the terrifying “Klaubauf” figures with their bells and furry masks get up to all sorts of mischief.
The “Rauhnächte”, the nights between Christmas and Epiphany, are also an integral part of the Vinschgau heritage and come with arcane traditions. Customs such as fumigation using herbs and resins are designed to protect homes and farms from evil spirits and getting the New Year off to a positive start.

When the year draws to a close and the snow-covered peaks of the Ortler group shine bright in the cold winter sunshine, Sulden turns into a truly magical destination for seeing in the New Year. Embedded in the magnificent mountain setting of South Tyrol, this is where you can experience a unique blend of alpine traditions, a festive atmosphere and unforgettable winter moments. When the New Year is rung in at midnight, Sulden is resplendent in a sea of lights. The fireworks display against the imposing mountain backdrop is a memorable sight and ensures an atmospheric start to the year.
Another New Year’s Eve highlight is the traditional torch-lit race of the Sulden ski school, when the instructors glide down the slope with brightly lit torches, creating a beautiful light display. The race is often accompanied by live music and a support programme that has something to offer for all age groups.

The annual farmers’ market in Sulden is where tradition meets flavour. The offer consists of fresh produce, handmade items and regional delicacies from local producers and artisans. Use the opportunity for purchasing a handmade souvenir from your holiday in South Tyrol and taste your way through the treats on offer.

The traditional carnival parade in Prad at the Stilfserjoch takes place on the Thursday before Ash Wednesday and comes with colourful costumes, music and a party atmosphere. Every year, this highlight of the carnival season attracts visitors and locals alike and turns the idyllic mountain village into a party mile filled with fun, creativity and tradition. Admire the typical South Tyrolean carnival figures, the “Zussln” with their bright garb and bells that chase out winter.
